Alicia Machado was born Yoseph Alicia Machado in Maracay Venezuela on 6 December 1976. Alicia is of a varied ethnic background. Her father is Spanish and her mother is from Cuban heritage. She is a prominent figure on television and beauty contests. Machado's fame started when she was named Miss Venezuela in 1995 at the age of 19, representing the state of Yaracuy. She won Miss Universe 1996 one year following her naming Miss Venezuela. This was the fourth Venezuelan winning the award. But her time as Miss Universe was marred by controversy and negative media attention as she grew weight during her reign.
